The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-return-to-office-rates-hit-pandemic-high-as-more-employers-get-tougher-11663535754\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> reports the return rate in major cities is the highest\u2014nearly half of prepandemic levels\u2014since COVID-19 forced most businesses to close their brick-and-mortar locations in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The increase appears to be tied to new hybrid work schedules.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Employees with the ability to work remotely are largely anticipating a&nbsp;hybrid&nbsp;office environment going forward,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/workplace\/390632\/future-hybrid-work-key-questions-answered-data.aspx\">Gallup<\/a> reported, &#8220;one that allows them to spend part of their week working remotely and part in the office.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Workers have gotten used to the flexibility that working from home affords them. It&#8217;s clear, the Washington, D.C.-based analytics company noted, that &#8220;we&#8217;re not returning to the same workplace we left.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The number of people working primarily from home tripled between 2019 and 2021\u2014from about 9 million people to 26.6 million people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau&#8217;s newly released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2022\/people-working-from-home.html\">2021 American Community Survey<\/a>. The data, released Sept. 15, is based on 2021 one-year estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Atlanta; Austin, Texas; San Francisco; Seattle; and Washington, D.C., lead the work-from-home lifestyle, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Memphis, Tenn.; El Paso, Texas; and Wichita, Kan., have only about 10 percent of their workforces working from home.<\/p>\n<p>The Advanced Workplace Associates (AWA), a global management and&nbsp;workplace&nbsp;consultancy based in London, found that organizations with hybrid working policies have a higher attendance rate than those who do not.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, for those with hybrid working policies, attendance is far lower than expected, and at best 42 percent,&#8221; according to the AWA. It collected data in June and July 2022 from nearly 80,000 employees from 28 organizations across 13 sectors and 13 countries to create its <a href=\"https:\/\/awa1stg.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/AWA-Hybrid-Working-Index-Report-UK-August-2022-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hybrid Working Index<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Location may play a part, too. <em>The New York Times<\/em> reports most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/01\/business\/return-to-office-battles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workers in small and midsize U.S. cities have returned to their work commute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>SHRM Online<\/em> collected the following articles on how employers are faring in getting remote employees back on site.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"shrm-Element-Subtitle\">U.S. Return-to-Office Rates Hit Pandemic High as More Employers Get Tougher<\/p>\n<p class=\"shrm-Element-P\">Workers are returning to U.S. offices at the highest rate since the pandemic forced most workplaces to temporarily&nbsp;close in 2020, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/coronavirus-case-count-11594333471?mod=article_inline\">infection rates continue to fall<\/a>&nbsp;and more companies intensify efforts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/back-to-the-office-hybrid-work-remote-labor-day-11662151436?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to bring employees back<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The higher return rate in September contrasts sharply with the post-Labor Day return a year ago, when businesses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/office-occupancy-sputtered-in-august-as-delta-variant-foiled-return-to-work-hopes-11631016001?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dialed back office-return plans<\/a>&nbsp;because of the spread of the Delta variant.<\/p>\n<p>Most employees are returning as part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/companies-wrestle-with-hybrid-work-plansawkward-meetings-and-midweek-crowding-11616146200?mod=article_inline\">hybrid workplace strategies<\/a>. Some businesses are moving toward requiring three days of in-office attendance, up from two days, said Kristopher Larson, CEO of Central Houston, which tracks security swipes into buildings.<br \/>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-return-to-office-rates-hit-pandemic-high-as-more-employers-get-tougher-11663535754\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"shrm-Element-Subtitle\">Employees Need to Be Persuaded of Value in Working from the Office<\/p>\n<p class=\"shrm-Element-P\">CEOs who want or require their employees to return to the office regularly must earn their willingness to commute.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, much has changed in the way office work is perceived and conducted, according to renowned pollster Frank Luntz.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Employees expect the CEO to &#8216;deserve&#8217; my employment and &#8216;deserve&#8217; my effort,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t this way before the pandemic, but now it is across the board. It applies to [the] working class, middle class [and] upper class and in every state in the country. They probably don&#8217;t have the same childcare issues as many employees.
