Those three states\u2014home to the nation\\&#8217;s three largest cities\u2014have reported more than 45 percent of all confirmed monkeypox infections in the United States. The <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/response\/2022\/us-map.html\\\">country has reported<\/a> more than 6,000 cases of monkeypox across 48 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/response\/2022\/us-map.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener noreferrer\\\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"shrm-Element-Subtitle\\\">California Takes Action<\/p>\n<p>California\\&#8217;s governor declared a state of emergency to speed efforts to combat the monkeypox outbreak. Gov. Gavin Newsom said the declaration will help California coordinate a governmentwide response, seek more vaccines and lead outreach and education efforts on where people can get treatment and vaccination. <\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\\\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-california-san-francisco-gavin-newsom-government-and-politics-535ad6616cf2551e57ae5d665816cac8\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener noreferrer\\\">Associated Press<\/a>) <\/p>\n<p class=\\\"shrm-Element-Subtitle\\\">Cities Step Up<\/p>\n<p>New York City and San Francisco have declared a local public health emergency. Vaccinations to help control the spread of the disease have been in short supply.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/08\/01\/california-monkeypox-emergency-newsom-00049166\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener noreferrer\\\">Politico<\/a>) <\/p>\n<p class=\\\"shrm-Element-Subtitle\\\">How It Spreads<\/p>\n<p>Monkeypox is spread through close contact with someone who has symptoms or by touching items that touched the infectious rash or body fluids, such as unwashed bedding and towels, or sharing cups and plates that came in contact with the infectious rash or body fluids. It is not transmitted via casual, brief conversations or walking by someone.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/news\/hr-news\/pages\/monkeypox-whos-at-risk-at-work.aspx\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener noreferrer\\\"><em>SHRM Online<\/em><\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\\\"shrm-Element-Subtitle\\\">WHO Calls Monkeypox Emergency<\/p>\n<p>On July 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a \\&#8221;public health emergency of international concern.\\&#8221; Employers should review information provided by the <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/index.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener noreferrer\\\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,<\/a> the <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/monkeypox\\\">WHO<\/a>, the <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2022\/07\/21\/fact-sheet-us-department-of-health-and-human-services-response-to-the-monkeypox-outbreak.html\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener noreferrer\\\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/a>, and the U.S. Department of State.
