Same-Sex Union Developments in Rhode Island and New York

Rhode Island and New York are the latest states to enact laws recognizing same-sex relationships.  18 states and the District of Columbia now recognize or have enacted laws that will soon take effect to legally recognize some form of union between same-sex couples.  Meanwhile, 41 states have enacted laws or amended state constitutions to ban same-sex marriage by defining “marriage” under state law as a union between one man and one woman.
